Active Youth Initiative for Social Enhancement (Ayise) with support from World Bank (Malawi) staff has helped 110 households that survived Tropical Cyclone Freddy in Blantyre with relief items worth over K3.5million.

Speaking during presentation ceremony in Mpama village, the Area of Traditional Authority Machinjiri, Ayise executive director Marcel Chisi said they mobilised support from well-wishers through social media platforms and the World Bank staff did not hesitate to contribute something from their salaries.

“When the cyclone hit, our immediate response was offering our Bangwe Youth Centre for internally displaced people. However, after realising that more support was needed to assist others, we called for support and the World Bank staff provided the items while Ayise offered logistical support,” he said.

The relief items include beans, maize flour, blankets and plastic buckets.

According to one of the survivors’ leaders at Mpama camp Collen Gwiliza, at least 114 people had their houses and maize fields damaged by the storm and have been living in camps where they struggle to get basic needs.

“This support will go a long way in alleviating the shortage of basic items here. We thank Ayise and the World Bank staff for the assistance,” he said.
